Don t Be A Sucker Essay - 1815 Words

Even after war, groups will always produce media with the intent of influencing the public. â€Å"Meet King Joe,† for example, is a post World War II film that follows Joe on an educational journey where he learns about how the American economy works to make his life better. The other post World War II film to be analyzed, â€Å"Don’t Be a Sucker,† follows Mike as a wise stranger tells him about how, as Americans, we should all be tolerant of each others differences lest we become like Nazi Germany. Both of these films utilize Plain Folks appeals and other techniques in an effort to influence public opinion; but one is black, deceptive, and unethical propaganda while the other may be closer to a rational attempt at persuasion than a piece of propaganda. These films differ in many ways, but let us start with how they are the same: the use of Plain Folks appeals. In â€Å"Meet King Joe,† the titular character is just your average, everyday shmuck that is mea nt to represent the average American male in the labor force. Joe talks with a pseudo-Brooklyn accent, he is not all that sharp, and he loves buying consumer goods with his fat, American paycheck (Meet King Joe). The other film, â€Å"Don’t Be a Sucker,† aims a little higher with its main character. Instead of your average blue-collar worker, we see what might be described as your average white-collar worker.
